Alternative Fuel Autos Catching On

Consumer interest and new technology are helping to drive the devlopment of alternative fuel vehicles. That's the word from experts who say there are over 10 million alternative fuel autos on the nation's roads today. That's according to data from R.L. Polk & Co.

The Polk figures also reveal that an unprecedented 1.5 million alternative fuel autos were sold in 2006, surpassing automakers' sales expectations by 50 percent. That's according to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

Currently, manufacturers are offering 60 models of these hybrid, clean diesel and ethanol-capable e-85 alternative fuel automobiles-up from just 12 models for sale in 2000.

Automakers are also working with the energy industry, the government, fuel providers and fuel retailers to help grow the e-85 ethanol-fueling infrastructure. For more information on advanced fuel-savings technology, visit autoalliance.org.
